Those that love DIY projects will probably want to install veneer panels themselves. However, when doing so you’ll want to avoid the following four mistakes, which can lead to unsightly bubbles or pattern ripples which are uneven.
Not Using the Proper Tools
Working with veneer can be challenging, especially for amateurs. One of the most common mistakes is not using the proper tools. An important piece of equipment that you’ll always want to have on hand is a vacuum press. It is a nifty gadget which will prevent air from entering surfaces by providing a level of pressure which is necessary for bonding the veneer on a desired piece. When a vacuum press is not used, this increases the likelihood of not getting a finish which is smooth.
Not Prepping the Surface Area
Whether you plan to work with your furniture, cabinets or other pieces, it is essential to prepare the surface area first. The exact method may vary from one veneer type to another. For instance, substrates might have to be sanded via 100 or 80 grit sandpaper, and the reason is because substrate surfaces such as plywood must be free of uneven elements and smooth in order to guarantee efficient bonding for glues or adhesive bonds. For veneers which are paper backed, you’ll want to test its rear surface by placing a droplet of water.
If you see that the water droplet is still present after five seconds, this means the rear surface will prove problematic when attempting to bond with the adhesive material. The quickest fix would be sanding its surface using 100 or 80 grit sandpaper. The sanding will enable the rear paper to securely bond with an adhesive material. For raw timber based veneer, there is no need to worry about prep time. All you have to do is wipe down the surface using naphtha prior to glue or adhesive application.
Not Using Glue Rollers
Not utilizing glue rollers during veneer paneling installation is a frequent mistake. Roller glues have proven indispensable since they are made to give the necessary support which prevents the veneer from creating bubbles. Additionally, when glue rollers are used, the adhesion will always be perfectly even.
Improperly Using Adhesive Material or Glue
It isn’t enough to have the right materials on hand for your project, you must also know how to use it, and this is an area where many people falter. The proper bonding of veneer to surfaces depends greatly on the adhesive material utilized. If the adhesive or glue is applied improperly, this will make it harder for bonding to occur, and in a worst case scenario it might take hours to redo it.
This is why you should only use the adhesive which is recommended for the veneer, and bear in mind that there are various glue types which are sold in hardware stores. If you aren’t sure which one is right for your project, contact your laminate board supplier. For instance, raw wooden veneer doesn’t bond well with yellow wooden glue or contact cement. For efficient and fast drying you want to use veneer glue instead.
